Critical View of Nurses and Nursing Programs, Felix J. Underwood M.D., 1938.

This short paper, delivered at the APHA meeting in Kansas City, describes the elements of public health nursing from the perspective of the Executive Health Officer of the Mississippi State Board of Health in 1938. Clearly identified are the valuable aspects of a public health nurse, most notably her ability and obligation to teach about health, her educational qualifiations, her purpose in field visits (to study the family as a whole, evaluate conditions related to health, render health service and stimulate health education). Also emphasized is the necessity of cooperation with the health officer, who is in charge of the work.
